The Yamaha FZS600 Fazer oil drain bolt and oil filter are located in fairly standard locations for a 4 cylinder, inline 4 engine.
The oil filter is on the bottom front of the engine, just behind the exhaust downpipes, the oil drain bolt is located on left side of the engine, close to the side stand.

Oil drain bolt and filter location shown with the fairings on the bike.
The oil drain bolt is located on the bottom/left of the engine, near where the side stand mounting point is. Unlike many other inline 4 cylinder engines the bolt is on the side of the engine (not the bottom).

Exact location of the oil drain bolt.
Note – The oil drain bolt is a 17mm bolt and should be tightened to 43nm when putting it back.
Don’t forget to check the condition of the washer and replace it if necessary as these can corrode and cause the bolt to leak oil.

The oil filter is located on the bottom/back of the engine
The oil filter can be accessed from the bottom/front of the bike (between the exhaust header pipes) and is located on the front/bottom of the engine, just behind the exhaust headers.
Note – The oil filter should be tightened to 17nm. If you don’t have a suitable torque wrench, as a rough guide, the filter should be tightened with a wrench a QUARTER TURN past finger tight (and remember to rub some oil on the filter rubber sealing gasket before installing).

The oil filter for the 1998 to 2004 Yamaha 600 Fazer is a Hiflo HF147 filter .
The Hiflo HF147 filter is the same as the filters below:
- Filtrex equivalent: OIF020
- Champion equivalent: F307
- Yamaha equivalent: 5DM1-344-000
Oil filter dimensions: Height: 50mm, width: 68mm

10w40 motorcycle oil is recommended for the 600 Fazer.
You will need 2.7 litres of engine oil for an oil and filter change (or 2.5 litres if just changing the oil and 3.5 litres after a complete engine strip/rebuild)
